Yes, of course. Well, thank you again, Sarah, for having me. I'm so honored and congratulations on the new podcast. Um, but yes, everyone, I'm Naz. I'm the host of the Swoon Diaries podcast. Um, it's been around since 2022. It used to be called the Soul Systems Podcast, and I hosted with my friend Ori. Um, and then I transitioned to the Swing Diaries Podcast in 2023. So yeah, it's been wonderful. I do um bi-weekly K-drama reviews and um kind of previews of new dramas that have come out and let you know my thoughts on those as well. Um, but yeah, it's a lot of fun, and um, yeah, I've been watching K-dramas since 2020. Um, so I can't believe it's coming on like five years, which is crazy. Um yeah, I absolutely love them. They're like my happy place, and I'm so happy I discovered them because um they changed my life in a way, not because of the actual shows, but the people that I've met through the podcast. Like I've like made so many friends with people that I would have never met otherwise if I didn't get into K-drama. So it's been a huge blessing in that way too.

Yeah, K-drama is so funny because it's like people have either never heard of it or they're like all in. It's yeah, it seems to be one or the other. And if you find somebody who's into it, they're like, Oh, I found my people.

Yes, no, absolutely. Because I I mean, I can't imagine being like one foot in, one foot out with K-drama. Yeah, I just feel like it's just such a consuming thing.

It's it is it's so compelling. Yeah. Well, so you started watching K-dramas during COVID, right? So do you remember what your first first one was that you watched?

I'll never forget Romance is a bonus book.

Have you seen that one?

I've started it, but I haven't finished it. Coming from publishing, it's a little, you know how sometimes you're too close to something and it's yeah. So that got you hooked.

SPEAKER_01 2:40

Yeah, yeah. I I started that one and I was it was love at first sight. And I was like, where have these shows been all my life? Like, this is all I want to watch going forward.

SPEAKER_00 2:52

That's kind of how I did too. Once I once I discovered them, I was like, Oh, this is fascinating, and I'm in. Yeah, let me let me find more of these. And thankfully, there are plenty out there. Yeah.

So many to choose from. It's a never-ending list, which is great.

Well, so give us five of your favorite K dramas. It can be like your top five, five favorite rewatches or some genre trope. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 3:16

Um, so my top five, um, so it's my dearest, um, Goblin, The Red Sleeve, I Tawan Class, and Aura Blues. Um, so clearly I love to cry. My dramas are are quite sad, but wrenching ones. Yes, gut-wrenching ones. I really love stories that um are just highly emotional and compelling and just require just so much of you to to watch, like not only engaging in like the romantic aspect, but also like emotionally and also like the journey the characters are walking through. I I like dramas that really pull at my heartstrings. And yeah, but those are like my top five.

I I love them. So has your top five changed over time, or do you have they has it been your top five for a while?

SPEAKER_01 4:10

Yeah, so um my top five was pretty consistent for a while. Um, and then last year, no, was it last year? No, the year before last. Oh my gosh, because we're in 2025 now. Um, at the end of 2023, my dearest changed my top five.

Yeah.

And that was like my newest like top five entry. But before then, like my top five had stayed the same pretty much from the beginning. And then I watched my dearest, and I was like, okay, it's it's breaking into the top five.

Once you've kind of watched a lot, it's probably hard to find the ones that resonate the most. Do you find that? I feel like the ones you watched early have a big impression, I think. Or that's for me. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 4:52

Yeah. Yeah, no, for sure.

SPEAKER_00 4:55

Well, is there a K-drama trope that you just can't resist? That you're like, oh, this is it. I'm watching this no matter what.

SPEAKER_01 5:03

I think for me, it's definitely um like the CEO romances, like bonus points if it's in the workplace. I can't resist. I will watch it every time. It never gets old. It never gets old. I love it so much.

SPEAKER_00 5:20

Yeah. Yeah, I love those too. I love workplace rom-coms, especially because they're just fun most of the time. Although it has to be done right because that power difference that if they handle that right, then I'm okay.

SPEAKER_01 5:32

Yes, absolutely. Because it can get icky, but when done right, it could be really good. And I feel like with the workplace, you get a lot of fun side characters too. So it's just usually like a pretty well-rounded story, which is nice.

SPEAKER_00 5:45

Yeah. I do love the when they have the extras, the side characters, and it they become the little found family. That's like my favorite thing. Yeah. I was trying to think. I just watched one recently, the uh Touch Your Heart. And it has the great office crew. You know, sometimes you only get a little bit about the office crew, but this one it had more full fully rounded characters. It had like personalities and stuff. I love that. That's funny.

Yeah, that's the best. That's the best. I still need to watch that one. I've heard it's so good.

SPEAKER_00 6:14

It's really good. Yeah, I liked it. It it's uh, and it's got the kind of almost episodic storylines, like you've got little cases that they're involved in. So that keeps it interesting, I thought. I thought it would make it more instead of it's just a love story and you've got 16 episodes of will they want they?

SPEAKER_01 6:33

So the back and forth. No, I love shows that have that episodic format because you have something that you're following other than the romance, like you said. So it keeps you engaged.

SPEAKER_00 6:41

Yeah, I love that. So, well, okay, so that's this trope. Do you have like uh a K-drama specialty? It sounds like you like the really deeply emotional ones. Do you have is that would that would be your go-to?

SPEAKER_01 6:56

Yes, those are my go-to. Um yeah, I I really love emotionally compelling stories. Those are my favorite. And we see the characters going through these like really um like huge growth journeys. Like, I think about like I Taewan class and how the main character, it you know, starts off as this revenge story, but it ends up being like so much more than that by the end. Um, but I also really, really love like really, really slow, like slice of life romances like one spring night or like call it love and things like that. Um, because they're like they're usually not they're not stressful, but like they're very deep. And I and I really, really like that.

Yes, I think that's true. Like you can with a slice of life rom-com, you do get to know the characters in a and there's something about like how they fit together that you can explore that in depth. It's really cool. Yes. One of my favorite things too.

Yeah, yes, yeah, just so rewarding.

Yeah. We talked a little bit about K-dramas impacting like people, uh like the community. Is there any other way K-dramas have impacted your life for you personally?

SPEAKER_01 8:10

Yeah. I think just they became kind of a way for me to decompress and like relax. And I think like um, you know, starting starting K-dramas in COVID time was on of obviously a very just uncertain time, very unprecedented for me. I'd never lived through a pandemic before. I was like, what is going on? And it was kind of a source of just solace. And I you like at the time, I would always end each evening by watching like one or two episodes of a K-drama. So it was like I could look forward to like my one to two hours of just turning my brain off and enjoying my drama. Um, so I just yeah, I love that. So it became kind of like a source of peace, but also like so much joy because they generally made me so happy. And I was like, I cannot believe I didn't know these existed. Like, where have I been?

Me too. Me too. Because like once I found them, I was like, oh, okay, these are this is an interesting form of entertainment that I love that is completely encapsulated. You get the whole story. It's just so different from the way TV is done. You know, in the West, it's episodic and it's like, let's keep this going for you know five years if we can. Yes, yes, and a lot of times that doesn't work out well.

It does not, it does not. Our shows go on for way too long, and you don't it doesn't always need to go on for as long as they do. And like I think I like you said, I love how it's like compacted. You're telling just one story in these like you know, 12 to 16 episodes, and it's nice because you can just kind of take in all of these stories, and also it was really helpful for me too, because I was finding that I was having trouble finding like American shows that I could enjoy. I feel like American TV just got like it just be it was just a lot. Like there's some things I just don't want to see when I'm watching TV. And I was kind of just like, well, what do I watch now? So I was watching like Hallmark movies for like a year, just like literally Hallmark nonstop. Um, I just couldn't find anything to watch, and then I discovered K Drop and I'm like, oh my gosh, they're just waiting for me the whole time.

Yeah, I feel like um American TV especially has gotten very dark and hard-hitting, and and it's sometimes topics that need to be explored and and it can be very, you know, it's a there's a place for that, but then it's I feel like that the lighter type of things just kind of disappeared. And there's yeah, so I think that's one reason they're put so popular, is that people have kind of gravitated, especially like if you like the lighter things, like for me, I'm like, okay, this is where I can find a rom com that to watch, which they don't seem to make anymore.

Right. No, the rom com is dead, and I'm like, what happened?

SPEAKER_00 10:51

Yeah. So we've talked on this a little bit. Are there any other reasons that you think hey drama is just so addictive that like once you're in it, you're just in it to stay?

SPEAKER_01 11:01

Yeah, I think also like I love like culture and I love learning about cultures that are different from my own. And I think that kind of um you're getting dropped into like something that you you're learning about for the first time. And I think for me, like that's something that really drew me in as well. Because it's like, oh, like that's very interesting. Like, I want to learn more about that practice. I want to learn more about like, you know, the the the the children to parent dynamics. I want to learn more about the relationship I dynamics, like culturally, like how they differ. And like that made me really interested too, because I just wanted to learn more. Um, and the more you watch, like the more you're like, oh, like I saw that in that drama too. I was like, this must be a thing. Let me investigate more. So that kept me going as well. Cause I just love learning about culture and things like that. So I think that keeps me going as well. And there's just such a different like plethora of different types of stories that are told in K dramas. Like there's something for everyone, like romance, crime, thrillers. Like there's all sorts of dramas that you could watch. And like it's never-ending. So that keeps you interested too, because you're like, I have a never-ending list of shows I can watch. Like and it's like on one hand, like, oh my gosh, I'm never gonna be able to watch all the dramas I want to watch, but also like I'll never run out.

So true. Yeah. And there is such a huge backlist that, and I feel like there's a lot of um, I think of them as like the marquee K dramas, you know, like the ones that are really well known and they're yes, maybe five or ten, five years old or so. And I have like a long list of those, and some of those I've started to kind of save them. I'm like, I'll put those away and I'll watch that because I want to save that for later because I know it's gonna be a good experience, you know.

Yes, yes, I do that too. I'm like, I'm gonna I'm gonna save that one just for a little bit, a little bit longer. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 12:47

Have that despair waiting for me. Exactly.

SPEAKER_01 12:51

Because you have to watch those at the right time too. You want to make sure that you're watching those at the right time. So yeah, no, I totally feel you.

SPEAKER_00 12:57

Well, have you had any K drama disappointments? I mean, I'm sure you have, but Oh yes.

SPEAKER_01 13:04

I think like I think la I think 2024 was not great for me in general with dramas, at least the the newer ones that came out. Um, I felt like the majority of the dramas I was actively waiting for, um, like Love Next Door, for example, I was waiting for that drama for like over a year. And Love Nextdoor is not a bad drama. It's it's fine. It's like a very it's a cute romance. There's very like really good like emotional depth in the drama, but it I still felt like it didn't quite live up to what I expected it to be. There's just something missing, and it's hard to put words to what it was missing, but I'm just like, this wasn't what I what I wanted entirely. Um and another one that was really disappointing was Queen of Tears. Who I was like, this, and I was so excited for that one. I I've been waiting for that one for like over a year, and then I was like, oh wow, this is not what I was expecting at all. Um just I just wasn't I wasn't impressed with a lot of shows, and I was so sad because I'm not a super harsh critic. So I was just like, oh, like, I don't know.

But if you've been looking forward to one and it, I feel like uh Love Next Door was marketed as a rom-com, but it really and it had some elements of rom com to it, but it wasn't really a rom com. It was more like a slice of life family story with all these other layers, and yeah, after a while I was just not as interested in it. I was really excited about it too. But yeah, yeah, sometimes just it just didn't work out. And I think probably the marketing has an impact on what we expect, and then if we don't get that, but I don't tend to look ahead too much because I'm not as familiar with some of the actors, and you know, I'm I'll find somebody, I'll watch their stuff, and I'll go back into their backlist, and so I'm learning more, but I've I kind of spend more time in the back list than the newer shows. Yeah, and so I kind of wait to see what the consensus is. I'll I'll dip into it, and then sometimes I'm like, eh, I'll I'll kind of wait.

So that's wise. That's wise. Like, I that's what I should have done last year.

SPEAKER_00 15:16

I wish I took the whole year off and just watched Wolves dramas because like well, I'm saying that, but I I watched Love Next Door and Queen of Tears too as they were coming out, and I was like, I should have waited maybe that solidified my let's wait a little bit and see what's going on.

SPEAKER_01 15:33

Just wait. Yeah, I know if it's like sometimes like I dive in like to everything so quick, and I'm like six episodes in, and I'm like, this is not it. And like I just wish sometimes I'll be like, I just I should have waited, but I'm so bad at binging. That's why I usually watch things as they come out because like I'm I watch things so slow, like it'll take me like three months to finish like a drama that's like fully aired, which is I get distracted.

Well, there is always something new, right? I mean, there's always something new, so that makes it hard to balance everything. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 16:04

Exactly.

Do you keep track of the dramas that you watch?

SPEAKER_01 16:09

I do. Um, so after like my first year of watching dramas, I made a spreadsheet. So I have like my master list of like all the dramas I've watched, and I like capture like what I would rate them, and then I have them in different categories. Like this is like my top tier phase of all time. And these are like the good ones, these are like the okay ones, these are like the trash ones. Um, and like I also have tabs for like what I watched in like a specific year. So like I know like what I watched, like by at the end of the year, like I know what dramas I watched in that year. Um, so yeah, it's just kind of like fun to look back, and then I keep my running watch list on this on the spreadsheet in a different tab as well. Um, so yeah, I after like yes, I try to keep organized because I'll just like because I don't know. I love lists, I love like keeping track and record of things. So once I watched like over 10 of them, I was like, I want to keep track of this, like I want to see it. So I have all this data now.

I think that's very common though. And I think it's funny that a lot of K-drama watchers do have their own list or they use um my drama list, you know, to keep track of things. But a lot of K-drama watchers have their own special spreadsheet organized however they want to organize it. And I just think that's so interesting because I've never felt compelled to do that with list of other shows I've watched, except for K dramas. It's like I want to remember what I've watched, and I like the idea of tracking it by year, which I did not do. So I had to go back at the end of last year and recreate, like from all my like list, I was like, okay, where when did I watch that? So it's like I understand that. Totally get that.

I love that. Yeah, I think it's like a hobby thing. I feel like even like with my like my reading, because we're both readers and like I keep track of everything on like good reads and like fable and things like that. Because it's just nice to look back and be like, what did I read? Oh, yeah, I didn't read that. So yeah, that's nice.

You're definitely not alone in that. Yeah. Yeah. Well, um, if you had a friend who had never seen a K drama and asked for a recommendation, do you have like a go-to recommendation that you tell people this, you gotta watch this, or do you try and match it to the perch person?

SPEAKER_01 18:24

Yeah, so um before like my go-to recommendations for people would be like watch Crash Landing on You or E Taewan class and start or start a startup. So I would like put those three there. Um, now that I've watched like so much more and like I know that people like different things, like romance isn't everyone's thing. Um, I'll ask the person, I'll be like, okay, like what's the vibe you're looking for? Do you want romance or do you want something a little bit more like on the dramatic side? Or like so I ask like more like pointed questions now. Um, because I've watched like a like a bunch of different things. Um, but yeah, like before my top three were always ET1 class, Crash Landing, and um startup. Yeah, and like they're good quality. Um so yeah, I'm like these are like good the good options, and those were kind of like my like some of my fair first dramas. And yeah, so yeah, but those are like my go-tos. I feel like everyone loves Chloe, so it's yeah, beginner.

I think and so that comes up so often, and I think part of it too is like the tw the COVID time, a lot of people found K dramas in, but still it's recommended over and over and over again, and people find it, and I think it's like a classic. It's one of those that you almost can't go wrong with because there's so much in there. There's the culture, there's uh the minor characters are so fun. Yeah, you've got the main storyline and then the secondary uh character, um second couple, you know, very different, but there's a lot, so you can find something in there probably that you're gonna enjoy.

Exactly. There's like so much to hang on to in that one. So much happens. So it's just like, yeah, it's like so every I feel like everyone can appreciate it. Yes.

Well, what are you currently watching right now? Do you have anything that you're really into right now?

SPEAKER_01 20:14

Yes. So currently I'm watching Love Scout, which is oh my gosh, it's so good.

SPEAKER_00 20:21

Are you enjoying that so much?

SPEAKER_01 20:23

Oh my gosh, it's amazing. Like the romance and like I just love everything about it. I love the pacing of it. It's so good. Um, I'm also watching The Queen Who Crowns, which is a historical drama. Uh-huh. Um, it is it's good, but like I won't lie, it's the plot is a little, it's going over my head a little bit. I don't it's losing me a little bit, but it's so like it's really juicy and dramatic. So I'm like entertained and I'm enjoying myself, but I'm not 1000% sure of like what's going on at the point where I'm at, right? But you're along for the ride. Yes, but I'm along for the ride. And I'm also watching a 2018 drama called He is Psychometric, and I'm really enjoying that one. Um, it's a nice like side drama. Um so yeah, those are the three dramas I'm watching right now.

Cool. All right, those are some good recommendations too, I think. I'm a little behind on Love Scout, so I have to catch up and I may just wait and then just like do a binge at the end.

I think you should just wait and just like then just finish it when because like the last episode's coming out next week. I would just wait because for me, that show's been really hard for me to wait in between episodes because it's so good.

Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah. I'm very much into their romance and then the office crew. You know, I want to know what's going on. I'm not as much into the dark, sad backstory. Yeah, because yeah, I feel like we kind of know where that story's gonna go, but I haven't watched it, so I may be wrong. I might be totally wrong.

Yeah, no, I think you're right. We've seen it coming from the beginning, so we know where it's going.

What else are you watching?

Um, I have dipped my toe into Japanese dramas, which I have not watched hardly any up until a week or two ago. And I tried um it's a drama that takes place. It's a reporter who works for like a gossip magazine, and it's called Off the Record. And I watched that and enjoyed it because it's like you said, it's like a look at a different culture, slightly different things that they do, uh similar to Korean culture, but there are differences. And so that one was very interesting, and it was more just like a slice of life kind of uh look at what it would be like to be a reporter. And then now I'm watching um it's a rom com called Why I Dress Up for Love. It's also Japanese, and it's so cute, it's just really cute. And um, yeah, I I would recommend that one if you like rom-coms because it's uh just yeah, it's a woman who's very much into social media. She's a like her job is social media for a company, and she meets a guy who doesn't, he doesn't even carry his phone with him. He's like totally unplugged, disconnected. And so, you know, like opposites attract, and then they they live in a house share with some other young people, and so you kind of get all their different stories. So I'll do that. Yeah, is it on Vicky? It is on let me think. Yes, it's on Vicky. I'll tell you where I track these things down.

Yeah, what was your first drama?

SPEAKER_00 23:49

It was Extraordinary Attorney Woo.

SPEAKER_01 23:52

Oh, that's a good one. That's a good one. Yeah, that's a great first drama too.

SPEAKER_00 23:57

Yeah, and I really enjoyed it, and I would I was just fascinated by it. Like the way they do the end credits, you know, where they you get the little vignette photos of everything that's happened in the episode, and I was like, oh yeah, that did happen at the very beginning of this episode because there's seems like so much happens, and yes, just it was just to look at the different culture. I was like, okay, this is very interesting. And it was very similar to I'd watched a French drama called Astreed about a woman who has like the same sort of she's um autistic but highly functioning, and she it was a crime drama, and so I was like, oh, so this is kind of like a street, but in Korea at a law firm, not a crime drama. And so it was just very interesting to kind of see how they were similar and how they were different. So yeah, that one I was very hooked after that, and then just found because this is my first life pretty soon after that, and then I was like, okay, oh my goodness, this is just like a gold mine.

I love that so much. Oh my gosh, I love because this is my first life. That's such a great drama.

Yeah, it was so funny. The dialogue in that is so funny. And I love the three friends and how you get their different stories. Yes, it was genius. I loved the structure of it, it was so good. Yeah, and I still look for that now. If I see a show that has three friends, I'm like, oh, maybe, maybe this will be good.

Yes, maybe this will be the next week. Yeah, yeah. I love any drama with the friend groups. It's just it's it's so good. So so good.

Like I was always trying to find like, when are the when the dramas coming out? Like what can I look forward to? And like, you know, you can find it on my drama list and things like that. But I was just like, I definitely that was definitely one of the things I wanted to do. I was just like, let's have a list of like all the upcoming shows so people can list more.
